But somehow, Susan just could not see that transition happening, though she had no idea why…just a gut feeling. But even so, Susan was feeling a tinge of hesitation and reluctance as she thought back to her younger days, and suddenly, she was struggling for breath and preparing herself to flee if this all went south. But then the sensation passed, and Susan remained right where she was and waited, hoping there would be some sort of communication—either verbal or through some other form—that would help her understand what it was he wanted from her. There was only so much she could discern from her weak ability to deduce anything from his gestures and body language.

Though she knew she was likely just projecting her own thoughts and hopes Edgecroft’s way, Susan began to wonder if he had, in fact, come to her just now sensing she was the only one in Tibbets who might be able to help him, if that, in fact, was what he was after by appearing to her. At the moment, she was operating solely on her own intuition and best efforts to figure it all out. As Susan considered trying to communicate with the apparition but having no idea how you went about that—did one just speak out loud or just think of what to say—the Edgecroft-thing bought its formerly blank and what had seemed to her previously as unseeing eyes from the floor to her face.

Though there were not truly eyes in the hollow, sunken holes where normal eyes would have been, it got Susan’s attention as a golden glow began to pulse from the openings in his head that made her gasp slightly. Had her thoughts of considering to communicate with it actually been somehow picked up by the specter and prodded him to speak to her? That seemed like a wild and imaginative supposition to her at the time, but then again, who knew? This was new to Susan, and she just went with whatever was happening and decided to react on the fly. She felt a tingle in her chest as the mouth of the ghost opened slightly and mouthed the words:
